Lesson 1: Introduction to Inspection

Topic 2: Promoting Phytosanitary Compliance Through Inspection

In this topic, we will explore how inspections promote phytosanitary compliance. Inspections can inform or lead to a reevaluated Pest Risk Analysis (PRA) and/or support pest-free areas. Moreover, phytosanitary certification requires that inspections be completed.

Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to describe how inspections inform phytosanitary compliance.

Since the goal of inspection is to confirm phytosanitary compliance, it is clearly not a stand-alone method for mitigating all pest risks. Inspections only reduce the risk of introducing agricultural pests and verify that previous actions have successfully been taken to mitigate pest risk. However, inspections are a critical component of any system of pest risk assessment and management efforts. The following are a few of the more common ways inspections are used within a system. Interact with the three following roles to discover more about how inspection strengthens the larger phytosanitary protection system.

In this topic, we discussed how inspections promote phytosanitary compliance. Inspections can inform a Pest Risk Analysis (PRAs), prompt a country to reevaluate an existing PRA, and/or support the establishment and maintenance of pest-free areas. Moreover, phytosanitary certification requires that inspections are completed.
