Lesson 2: What are International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPMs)?

Topic 4: Types of ISPMs

In this topic, you will learn about concept and reference standards that explain wide phytosanitary principles, definitions, or procedures. Specific standards cover particular commodities, pests, or mitigation. The IPPC also publishes other types of documents, such as explanatory documents and appendices.

Objectives:

  • Compare and contrast concept standards and specific standards
  • Describe other IPPC publications, including recommendations, explanatory documents, and technical manuals
Types of ISPMs and Other Related IPPC Publications

As stated throughout this module, a fundamental role of the IPPC is to develop and adopt standards for phytosanitary measures. Sometimes standards are difficult to understand. To ensure that standards are useful and understandable to all members, the IPPC publishes specific standards and explanatory documents and is considering development of technical manuals to provide more specific guidance to contracting parties, particularly those in developing countries. In addition, the IPPC also develops recommendations.
